Software, Network and Systems Experience
Began working with personal computers in 1985 on the Atari ST platform for
MIDI sequencing and electronic music production, expanding into
telecommunications, database systems and online information services.
Entered the online environment through BBS systems and CompuServe and participated in the early development and adoption of Internet services on Kauaʻi with Hawaii Online, the island's first ISP.
Moved to Macintosh systems in 1989 and became extensively involved with
Macintosh hardware, software, networking and user support. Served as President
of the Kauai Macintosh User Group and wrote a monthly technical column for its
newsletter.
Worked with DOS systems beginning in the mid-1980s, including development of a computerized voicemail system in 1990 that remained operational for approximately ten years.
Began migrating server and data environments to Linux around 2000. Developed the DSI Portal as an early cloud-based productivity environment, providing centralized web applications, data storage and business services years before mainstream cloud platforms.
Currently work primarily with heterogeneous environments combining Linux,
macOS, Windows, Internet services, cloud infrastructure, network appliances

Professional Perspective
My work has consistently centered on making technology useful rather than
treating technology as an end in itself.
Over more than three decades, that has evolved from personal computers, MIDI
systems, databases and early telecommunications into Internet infrastructure,
networked business systems, Linux servers, web applications, cloud services
and connected devices.
Many of the concepts that were once goals - networked community information,
Internet-connected schools and organizations, cloud-based productivity,
open-source infrastructure, online directories, and globally connected
communications - are now ordinary components of the environments I design
and support.
My continuing focus is integrating proven technologies with emerging tools to create systems that are practical, maintainable, understandable and productive.
